On February 24, 1969, two days before he turned 37, the legendary Johnny Cash led his traveling troupe behind the foreboding walls of the California State Penitentiary at San Quentin, long known as one of America's toughest prisons. Johnny Cash had performed prison concerts since 1958 where he played the same venue as recorded here in 1969, San Quentin Jail. Cash had an affinity and empathy for prisoners, starting a reform campaign in 1972, with this concert following 1968's "At Folsom Prison" which is his definitive recording in this environment. At San Quentin is the 31st overall album by Johnny Cash recorded live at San Quentin State Prison on February 24, 1969 and released on June 4 of that same year. The concert was filmed by Granada On New Years Day 1959, Johnny Cash played his first-ever prison show at San Quentin.
