In the afternoon of 24 December 1818, Franz Xaver Gruber from the Upper Austrian Innviertel region composed the melody of “Silent Night” at his meagre teacher’s residence in Arnsdorf. His friend Joseph Mohr — assistant priest from the neighbouring Oberndorf — had given him the original poem, asking him to add a melody to it.
